History & Mission
Firo was launched in September 2016 under the name Zcoin, making it one of the first cryptocurrencies to implement the Zerocoin protocol for on-chain privacy. Founded by Poramin Insom and guided by research from cryptographer Aram Jivanyan, the project has always been at the forefront of privacy technology innovation.
In late 2020, the project rebranded from Zcoin to Firo to reflect its evolved identity and new privacy protocol — Lelantus. The name "Firo" evokes the concept of burning (destroying) coins to break transaction links, which is fundamental to how the protocol achieves privacy.
Firo's mission is to give every individual the ability to transact privately, preserving financial freedom as a fundamental human right. The team believes that without privacy, digital money becomes a tool for surveillance and control.
